I have this past year found the marvel named Twitter and have met some, let me call them, interesting people on the social networking platform.  It is addictive and tends to take up too much of your time.  As I am writing this, I have checked my twitter feed twice since the start.  I think I have a problem!  You should get this problem! It’s an awesome problem!

The following list comprises the most passionate sports people I know.  If you on twitter you might be following a few of them, if you not, I advise you start with the following thing right away!

@fpbonthuys – Runs this very website...

 @djvanman – Check out Dave’s view top right.

@followthebounce @iamjohnnyking @RuggaWorld – Host 3 of my favourite rugby blogs.

@RichardHops – Very opinionated and loves his boks!

@grantwp – Big time Stormers/WP man.

@grantpringle – Don’t confuse the 2 Grants!

@KeeganKruger – Hockey, football, rugby, awesomeness... he’s your guy!

@DarylHH – He might be living where the Sharks roam free, but he is passionate about WP.

@AntKaplan – Biggest Sharks supporter living in OZ.

@BokShark – Miles is sport mad, unlucky about the whole fan of the Sharks thing though...

@Runningflyhalf – One of the first true rugby men I have met on Twitter.

@DJMager7 – Knows a decent amount about the game we love.

@EgonSeconds – Big name, big heart, keeps it real.

@clydesta – Dont be fooled by his avatar, he’s worth the follow!

@GarethB81 – Prefers cricket, but knows his rugby.

@IgorNaj – Shame, he stays in Jozi.  Clever tweets!

And then, over the festive season, a new hashtag emerged - #rugbyunited. This tagline has united followers of rugby across the globe.  Your following increases and you find a host of new rugby mad people to follow.  I keep checking #rugbyunited frequently to find new rugby nuts.

These guys enrich my viewing experience and have my seal of twitter approval.  I can’t wait for SupeRugby to begin... and more importantly I can’t wait for the RugbyBanter to begin!

If you are a typical beer drinking, rugby loving man.  This should be the highlight of your year every year from now on.  For those who have been there before i'm sure you will agree with me, there is nothing like it on earth!

Thank goodness Robbie Fleck and Bob Skinstad got together had a few too many beers and dreamt up this amazing event.  Hundreds of rugby matches, thousands of spectators and countless draughts drunk at Hamiltomns Rugby Club in the beautiful city of Cape Town.  The biggest beer tent in Africa and live entertainment from some of South Africa's leading bands.  And this has happened since 2009 getting bigger and bigger each edition.
This year 78 teams took part in the competition that was separated by 4 divisions.  Premier (for the serious rugby squads), Light beer (for those squads that come to have fun, but play to win), Heavy beer (for the squads that expect you to be hungover and in poor form) and finally the Veterans (for the over 35's that try to roll back the years).

I played for a squad named RQH Rugby in the light beer division.  The captain of the squad simply combined friends and family ranging as wide and far as from Johannesburg, Welkom and Cape Town.  Squads could be as big as 18, however you are allowed more for a small penalty fee.  The game is as follows: 5 forwards, 5 backs, 9 minutes a half 1 min half time and unlimited rolling subs. (The Heavy beer and Veterans divisions love that last rule.)

Here are a few pics of us during the course of the weekend.  And yes our jerseys were designed by our own team captain Ruan Vorster, so direct your comments at him!

Here are a few clips to wet your appetite. Starting with a strong tackle by Frans Steyn.

Yeah I'm a prop, so I'm allowed to say this:  Swan diving is useless!

If you don"t believe me check this clip... doos...

RugbyBanter.com managed to spend some time with the ex-Stormer.  The current Hamiltons RFC man talks about his heritage, his toughest opponents, his choice for bok coach and a sneaky tour story amongst other things.  Sit back and here more from the WP Currie Cup try scoring record holder, Egon Seconds.
Hi Egon, RugbyBanter.com would like to thank you for sparing some of your time to chat with us
No problem...
So, you seem to be a very loyal and patriotic kind of person, where does Egon call home?
I would like to think so yes... I am from Cape Town, grew up in Factreton, Kensington. Stayed in Kimberley for a few years, but back in the Mother City again. Home now is in Mowbray, Southern Suburbs.
You have had a long rugby career that started when you were young at WP, Stormers and went on to play at Griquas, for the blitzbokke and you even played against the British and Irish Lions.  Which jersey was your favourite to play in?

As the 27th of January approaches the shortlist seems to be getting smaller and smaller.  Rassie Erasmus has hinted at a technical analyst post at SARU, effectively ruling himself out.  Alister Coetsee has commented on his task at the Stormers being far from over.  Gert Smal is rumoured also to be finishing his contract in Ireland midway in 2013.  That leaves Heynecke Meyer as the only standout candidate.  John Mitchell has not distanced himself from the job, but SARU are hesitant to appoint a foreigner. Pieter De Villiers met with SARU boss Jurie Roux, he apparently was less than happy when exiting that meeting.  All fingers are pointing at Heynecke Meyer, in my opinion, 4 years too late.

What do you think?

Danny Care has twice in the last 6 weeks been found guilty of alcohol related charges.

In early December he was arrested for being drunk and disorderly, the new England boss Stuart Lancaster and his Harlequins manager Conor O’Shea both handing out disciplinary measures.

The young 24 year old however, in the early hours of New Year’s Day, was again arrested, this time for driving under the influence of alcohol.  He was more than twice over the legal limit.

Every year some players make a name for themselves.  I predict these guys will leave an impression on the rugby world in the first half of the year.

Breeding ground for the Currie Cup
-          Tythan Adams (Maties) is a dangerous winger that should head the try scoring list.
-          Wesley Dunlop (Tuks) is a more than capable flyhalf that has already played Currie Cup and won the SA                 Club Champs with College Rovers.
-          The Cheetah Lappies Labuschagne (Shimlas) is an exciting prospect that impressed in the last Currie Cup.
-          Os Hamman (Maties) is built like a double door fridge!  He scores plenty for a prop!
-          Watch out for Siya Mdaka (Pukke).
-          Adrian Kritzinger (UCT) is a centre in the De Wet Barry mould, very good.

Time to have some fun, some more interesting awards.

Forward benchwarmer of the year:
Runner up:  Ben Franks                                                Winner:  Bismarck Du Plessis
He was outstanding all year long yet played a million games off the bench.  Cheers Smitty, Bizzie sends his regards.  Huge.

Here comes the second instalment of the Webbies.  We have dealt with the show ponies at the pack.  Now it’s time for the real men to be rewarded.  The men that win the games.  The hard grafters.  The hard men.  The rugby players that own a Ford Ranger and live in Tough Guy City.  The Forwards.

First award for the forwards will be the Os Du Randt “Ox” award for best loosehead prop of 2011:

The nominees are:  Tendai “Beast” Mtawarira, Tony Woodcock, Andrew Sheridan, James Slipper, Gethin Jenkins, Cian Healy, Jean-Baptiste Poux and Wyatt Crockett

The Beast had an impressive year winning back the bok no. 1 jumper from Gurthro Steenkamp (SA rugby player of the year 2010) who had to fight his way back from injury.  Tony Woodcock was rock solid and consistent for the All Blacks all year.  Andrew Sheridan was not at his best, yet still proves that he is a formidable scrummager.  James Slipper has emerged as a prop with good technique from Australia.  What a weird sentence including both ‘good’ and ‘Australia’ when describing a prop!  He lacks aggression at times.  Gethin Jenkins is unfairly overshadowed in the current Welsh pack.  Cian Healy is probably the first name Declan Kidney puts on his Irish team sheet after Brian O’Driscoll.  Poux is as strong as an ox and gets through heaps of work in the loose.  I include Wyatt Crockett in this list as he is easily the best prop of the Super 15 for the Crusaders, yet never even made the All Black squad for the RWC, madness I tell you.
